Tender Is the Night is a novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was his fourth and final completed novel, and was first published in Scribner's Magazine between January and April 1934 in four issues. The title is taken from the poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats.

In 1932, Fitzgerald's wife Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was hospitalized for schizophrenia in Baltimore, Maryland. The author rented the La Paix estate in the suburb of Towson to work on this book, the story of the rise and fall of Dick Diver, a promising young psychoanalyst, and his wife, Nicole, who is also one of his patients. It was Fitzgerald's first novel in nine years, and the last that he would complete. The book reveals the detrimental days of Fitzgerald's past as he lives out his last remaining years with his wife, Zelda. The novel almost mirrors the events that take places as characters are pulled and put back into mental care, and the male figure, Dick Diver, starts his descent into alcoholism. While working on the book, several times he ran out of cash and had to borrow from his editor and agent and write short stories for commercial magazines. The early 1930s, when Fitzgerald was conceiving and working on the book, were the darkest years of his life and, accordingly, the novel has its very bleak elements that he experienced himself.

Love it just as much as I did 30 years ago. It is known that all of his primary female characters were entirely based on Zelda. Many characteristics taken from Zelda's diary from which he drew his plots. Many, today feel that his writings are old fashioned and stale but I love everything he wrote.

Tender Is the Night Annotated eBook F Scott Fitzgerald Reviews

I had a difficult time reading this book, even though it is beautifully written. The structure is confusing, and there is too much detail. If you would like to have a feeling for the works of Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is much, much better.
This was a download for me. It was easy and quick. I read this book decades ago but somehow lost it during a move. Was nice to find a resonably priced ebook.
Fitzgerald's writing is extremely poignant and culturally significant to the time period in which he wrote. Great stuff. You will enjoy.
I read this after reading a bio of Gerald and Sara Murphy ("Everybody Was So Young"), the friends Fitzgerald based this novel on so it was even more impressive to me. What a treasure he was.
This review is NOT for the novel itself! This edition was advertised as "annotated"...there are NO annotations in this edition! I was looking forward to some literary analysis as I read this great American classic, but I was sorely disappointed as I worked through this edition to find that there was not one single annotation. The novel itself is one that no one who is a student of American literature should miss, but I would suggest that customers should try to find another e-edition that truly is annotated. The main problem with an edition that is not annotated is that there are many spots when Fitzgerald uses languages other than English. I read French so I was able to negotiate those parts, but there are some dialogs in German, Italian, and if I remember correctly, Spanish. So unless the reader is comfortable with these additional languages, there are spots in the novel which may prove to be obstacles.
Found out that I don't like Fitzgerald at all. He might have been an icon of the twenties but he seems like an overgrown adolescent in this century.
It's nice to go back and read the FSF classics. This is my favorite. The Beautiful and Damned is good too. This Side of Paradise is impossibly difficult for me - I think it is just not a very good novel. Planning to re-read Gatsby as well.
Love it just as much as I did 30 years ago. It is known that all of his primary female characters were entirely based on Zelda. Many characteristics taken from Zelda's diary from which he drew his plots. Many, today feel that his writings are old fashioned and stale but I love everything he wrote.
